The Tavern Hotel was on the northeast corner and was operated by Wm. Andrew Cohen until his death in 1933. His father, Phillip A. Cohen, was born in 1839 in Prussia; he came to Madison County and established a general store. He became the postmaster in 1868, using his store, where the hotel is now located, as the post office. In the preceding fifty years, the post office was moved to various locations with each new postmaster, but in 1920 it was moved back to the Cohen Building. This was the site when Phillip's grandson, Phillip Stokes Cohen, became the postmaster in 1935. (Phillip Stokes cohen married Phyllis Huskey). In the 1920's, the old Cohen building was remodeled and second and third stories were added for hotel rooms. He was married to EMMA WIGHT on 28 Jan 1874.
