This is the trailer of my good friend, Gregg. He doesn't fly planes - his trailer is used to haul Foosball tables to and fro. It is a U. S. Cargo - it was purchased used for under $2000.
Gregg and I first met in about 1982. We both loved the game of Foosball and played regularly at the Games People Play arcade in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was out of high school and had either not yet entered college or had dropped out. On the other hand, I already had a Master's in Computer Science, a great job as Data Processing Manager for a large CPA firm in town, a Nissan 280ZX, and the envy of all the guys playing Foosball at the local arcade. Being in my early 30s in those days, I was regarded as an old fart but had amazingly fast reflexes (for one so old) and could keep up with those boys. The best of that bunch (Russ King - more on him in a moment) and I joined the professional Foosball tour, played in several regional tournaments, and won a total of $130. Gregg, despite not being in school at the time, was a body builder and always an upright, honest, dependable, and friendly fellow. It was he who first recognized Russ's playing skills (Russ was 6 years younger than Gregg) and saw to it that he was 'protected' against the bullies who routinely lost Foosball matches to Russ's brilliant play. By 1987 I had married and moved away. In early 2001 while browsing the internet for 'Foosball', a web page came up declaring Russ King the 1993 and 1999 Tornado World Doubles Champion. The article indicated that Russ, now in his 30s, had nurtured a high school dropout and taken him under his wing. The article also stated that Russ, himself, had had an older benefactor and that he wanted to do the same for someone else. I immediately set out to contact Russ. One of the responses I received was from Gregg, my old buddy from so long ago. Believe it or not, he and I live in the same small town in Arkansas! He's developing a Foosball program for kids to not just develop the game in Central Arkansas (hence, the trailer), but also to provide a smoke-free, drug-free environment where kids can compete in a fun sport. Gregg cited what I did for Russ has his motivation. He also confided that he saw what education had done for me and that he entered college, earned a degree in business, passed the CPA exam, and is now part owner of a state-wide business. Wow. I am humbled. It never occurred to me that one could have influence on our young people to this degree. Today, Russ is a sales representative for Warrior Custom Golf. His company sponsors his exploits on the Foosball professional tour. He and I have spoken a couple of times now and we plan on a reunion later this summer. He's just married a California girl and she has not yet seen Arkansas. Gregg, his wife, my girl friend and I will have a great, great time. |
